Sal, you are perfectly right about the inconsistency of the above -
it's incongruent and unfair. However, I disagree with lumping all
scientific activities - as well as all those who believe in and/or
contribute to them, together in one broad category.

The point is, just as there are good farmers and bad farmers (as well
as many who are good in some ways and not so good in others), the same
is true for scientists, legislators, lawyers, barbers, bankers,
butchers, bakers and candle stick makers.

Also, science is a method and can be used for many purposes. I suggest
you find and save good examples of it that support your own, so that
you don't get caught unprepared.

The important thing is for each to be aware as possible of the
underlying issues that affect us and also to maintain those who share
our concerns informed of what we know to be true. Webs of confidence
result from that and gaining the public's trust is never a simple
matter, it's a long term process and many are involved (although it's
not necessary to convince everyone in order for things to come out as
they should). In any case, there's no other row to how and if the row
is straight enough and has the right gradient, the water will flow to
the end.

The ball game's not over and your concerns are shared by may of us -
you are far from alone.
