Monsanto's numbers look ugly

This from Monsanto's own 2000 Technology Use Guide, a glossy piece of
promotional material for growers...

"Get the yield advantage of YieldGard [Bt corn]" below which they show
the 1998 yield "advantage" they attribute to their technology.

Illinois 1.5 bu

Iowa 3.1 bu

Kansas 3.7 bu

Nebraska 4.2 bu

Dakotas 7.7 bu

Since their technology fee alone is $24. per bag, and three acres per
bag is not outrageous (many farmers plant more heavily than that), we
can allow a technology fee of $8/ac. Only in the Dakotas (not big corn
states) did the yield advantage even pay the technology fee. Nebraska
sort of broke even, and for the others it would appear to have been a
loser.

1998 was not a heavy year for ECB, but the numbers still look rather
ugly to me.
