organic pumpkin & winter squash pest management

This is just an observation on the cucumber beetles last year. My neighbor
who burned wood to heat and spread the ash on his garden for a number of
years had no squash or cucumber beetle problems while my "newly converted
from sod" garden plot also of silty clay loam was overrun with both squash
and cucumber beetles. Guess who is spreading wood ash on his garden now?
