Phd. Scholarship Opportunities
The New England Ecological Economics Group (Centre for Water
Policy Research, University of New England) and State Forests
NSW have developed two very topical and interesting Phd
scholarships. We are seeking candidates with an interest and
experience in the forestry planning and policy area. Each
scholarship will involve study on a full-time, internal basis,
supported by a tax free stipend (equivalent to the Australian
Research Council SPIRT rate). both projects will involve strong
interaction with State Forests of NSW personnel.
It is hoped that the selected candidates will commence studies at
their earliest possible opportunity.

Encouraging Farmer Investment in Hardwood Forestry: An Ecological Economics
Investigation
Industry Partners: State Forests of New South Wales
Research Organisation: New England Ecological Economics Group, Centre for
Water Policy Research, University of New England
The focus and main aim of this Phd research project is to identify the most
strategic resource rights, environmental management and policy arrangements
consistent with sustained farmer investment in native hardwood forest
ry. The work will involve a high level of collaboration with State Forests
NSW and the results will contribute to the development of policy and
institutional arrangements to the greatest long term benefit of private and
public interests. On a more conceptual level, the research will present a
methodological contribution in relation to the design and assessment of
resource rights and other institutional arrangements compatible with ecol
ogical economic sustainability.
Further information is available from the project supervisors: Dr Roderic
Gill, University of New England, Armidale rodericg@optusnet.com.au or

An Ecological Economics Investigation into the Benefits and Practicalities
of a Biodiversity Credits Trading System
Industry Partner: State Forests of New South Wales
Research Organisation: New England Ecological Economics Group, Centre for
Water Policy Research, University of New England
Following the model of carbon credits, this Phd research will explore the
prospects for a formal biodiversity credits scheme as an instrument of
economic policy aimed at improving local to global ecological economic sust
ainability. The research will investigate the most pragmatically effective
institutional arrangements to support the implementation and operation of
such a scheme. The setting up of a market for biodiversity credits wou
ld, at least in principle, focus attention on the links between ecosystems
and economies from the local to global levels and provide a mechanism with
which to facilitate ecologically sustainable economic activity across p
olitical boundaries.
Further information is available from the project supervisors: Dr Roderic
Gill, University of New England, Armidale rodericg@optusnet.com.au or Dr
Jim Shields, Wildlife Manager, State Forests NSW JimS@sf.nsw.gov.au
