Potatoes are an extreme case, and should not be regarded as emblematic or
typical of pesticide use, or intensity of culture in general. Also, they
may be a good candidate for GE interventions against foliar pests, since
some promoters cause expression only in green tissue, and the edible part is
not green. I don't know specifically what promoter Monsanto uses in their
Bt potatoes however.
