Everyone-
As a long time member of the Organic community (I farm in western Oregon),
I keep wondering why everyone thinks these new Organic rules no matter how
good are going to protect the small and medium size farms. I watch the
consolidation of the market place and the prices now being received by
growers and it is already evident that many medium size growers are
struggling, small growers have opted out of the shipping markets and focus
on direct marketing of one sort or another, large growers in California are
flooding the market with cheap organic products of sometimes questionable
quality, often prices are set below cost because produce will keep only so
long, the large Natural food chains keep mentioning "increasing their
buying power" as they acquire stores (translation "give lower prices to
producers"). Why is a strict Organic Rule going to keep prices at a level
in which small and medium size growers wil thrive? Incidentally I am a
small grower 6'5" 275#, 40 acres in production.
