As a point of interest, adjusting for inflation, this is the equivalent
of 34.2 cents in 1970 and 23.6 cents in 1955.
As an historical reminder, gas in 1970 was typically 38 cents, and in
1955, 29 cents. Taxes now are *much* higher, so the fuel component is
still quite cheap.
It's amazing what we now consider "hardship," and even more amazing
that the administration in Washington would seriously propose
"emergency" spending on a par with the 1993 Midwestern floods in order
to relieve the supposed hardship. </elderly cackle>
