Saneteers,

This is my response from Alex Avery to a recent letter submitted to him
and Sanet:

ALEX WROTE:

Did anyone notice that Dave doesn't have a sense of humor.

Dave, what scared you? That I would spotlight the absurdity of the
arguments from people with a fundamental and elitist opposition to a
much needed technology. I'm not dismissing legitimate concerns about
genetically-engineered organisms. That is why I and the Center for
Global Food Issues supports science-based environmental and food safety
regulation of the use and application of biotechnology. Biotechnology
is like dynamite, a tool which can be used for both good and bad.

I've spoken directly with Ms. Mellon and have read much of Ms. Shiva's
work. My boss has debated Ms. Shiva. I perceive Ms. Mellon and Ms.
Shiva to be zealots. They are not trying to stop bad biotechnology,
they want to stop all biotechnology. How else to explain why they would
oppose the golden rice? Funded by a philanthropic foundation
(Rockefeller), backed with philanthropic government funding (Swiss),
distributed freely through an inclusive international rural development
organization (IRRI) to improve the health of millions people throughout
Asia.

This debate has gotten silly! Ms. Shiva's arguments are especially
silly! I merely pointed that out. You call it "political rhetoric." I
call it the cold, hard, Luddite truth!
