Gain Ideas to Improve Farm Profits, Stewardship at March
Conference
College Park, MD - In an era of declining commodity prices,
farmers are trying to reduce their costs of production and
maximize their profit potential in the marketplace. To that
end, a Maryland nonprofit organization is hosting a two-day
conference in Hagerstown focusing on profitable farming in
the mid-Atlantic region.
Farmers who use alternative production and marketing
strategies will share their expertise on such topics as
small ruminant livestock production, improving soil
quality, selling directly to restaurants and using their
location near Washington, D.C., to appeal to tourists.
"I wouldn't miss this conference," says Walt Drummond, a
diversified grain and vegetable farmer in Cecil County, Md.
"It will be a great opportunity to learn from farmers who
are actually making money by reducing their costs and
improving their marketing."
"Farming for Profit and Stewardship," will be held March
10-11, 2000, at the Ramada Inn Convention Center in
Hagerstown, Md. Keynote speaker Tom Trantham, a South
Carolina dairy farmer, will discuss how he used rotational
grazing techniques to convert a high-production, low-profit
dairy into a money-making pasture-based operation. Some of
the concurrent session topics include: Small farm
cooperatives Alternative livestock production Selling to
restaurants Managing phosphorus on the farm On-farm dairy
processing Using woodlots and riparian areas for income
Agritourism Grazing economics and herd health Organic grain
production.
The conference is sponsored by Future Harvest-Chesapeake
Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, Maryland Cooperative
Extension and Belstville Agricultural Research Center, ARS,
USDA.
