I certainly respect your pride in the corn varieties you've help to breed
but are there no yardsticks for quality other than bu/A? It seems to me
that as long as that is the primary goal of breeding we are chasing the
wrong ideal. When I grow corn (or any other crop) to feed myself and some
of my neighbours maximum ear size is not in the equation. My goal is to
please the senses - smell, taste, appearance, texture - first and nutrition
second. I've placed nutition second only because I have a hunch the two
are tied together. Just as plants can tell us the quality of the soil if
we learn to observe carefully and cattle can skillfully select the most
nutritious (and probably palatable) grass first, we too have that ability
if we haven't been trained by the marketplace to disregard it.
