This is a temporary position of 10-15 hours a week, for 3 to 5 months,
starting March - May.
SALARY $9-11/hour according to educational level, experience; without
benefits (Social Security only)
We encourage interested individuals to seek outside funding, either through
school internship programs or private foundation grants. This will allow
us to increase the hourly rate, number of hours per week, and/or the
duration of the internship, as appropriate.
JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a research and writing project. The intern will prepare an
annotated resource listing of farmworker safety materials.
Emphases: pesticides; US Midwest/north central region.
Audience: Spanish-speaking farmworkers; professionals that provide
training and outreach services to farmworkers.
Sources: Internet, public libraries, internal IATP materials, Worker
Protection Standards (WPS) and pesticide safety education professionals
Translation: position may involve limited translation of English language
materials into Spanish.
There is a wealth of material on WPS and pesticide training. The intern
must be able to locate, survey, and categorize available resources,
evaluate an appropriate subset of this material, and then organize the
information into a user-ready document, all within a very limited
timeframe. The intern will consult with outside experts for advice.
Limited local travel involved.
REQUIREMENTS
- experience or demonstrated interest in farmworker health and safety
issues OR in the interface between agriculture and the environment/ human
health
- Spanish language proficiency
- proficiency in word processing and E-mail and Internet applications
- library and Internet research skills
- good writing skills
- good planning and time management ability
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO APPLICANTS WITH
- undergraduate degree in a field germane to the project, such as
agricultural sciences, environmental health, social work, epidemiology,
environmental education, adult education
- knowledge of food and agriculture sectors in the Midwest
- knowledge of farmworker issues in the Midwest
- graduate school degree or coursework
- demonstrated proficiency in developing resource bibliographies or similar
documents
