Dear Fellow Friends and Farmers,

An important member of our farming family has died. John Hirzel of Hirzel Canning Company and Farms in Luckey, Ohio died last Wednesday morning after a year long battle with lung cancer. John pioneered growing vegetables organically on a large scale for the past twenty years. He traveled around the United States talking and listening about sustainable agriculture, and grew nearly 900 acres of organic tomatoes and crops along with his conventional tomato and crop rotations of nearly 2000 acres. He was strongly committed to family and the family business that his great grandfather started 75 years ago. I will remember his quiet action-oriented strength of spirit, his commitment to sustainable agriculture when it wasn't profitable or supported by the farming community at large. He was a man of action and innovation. He was a strong, patient, and warm presence in his family and will be sadly missed. He is survived by his wife and two sons, three brothers and two sisters, mother, and large Hirzel family.
Anyone who knew John and would like to know more about the memorial service on the 20th of February in Toledo or are interested in contributing to the First Congregation Unitarian Church in Toledo, St. John's High School, or the John Hirzel Agricultural Research Farm, please contact me and I can forward the specific information to you.

Very truly yours,
Robert Moore, Jr.
