Nominations Sought for New Agriculture Research Award

WALTHILL, NE - The Center for Rural Affairs and the Consortium for
Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (CSARE) seek people who have
worked to develop sustainable food and farming systems that are practical,
productive, and environmentally sound.

The groups are looking for innovative farmers, ranchers, research
scientists, educators and others to submit nominations for the Seventh
Generation Research Award: a national recognition award. The award's
purpose is to recognize people who work to further develop the practice of
sustainable agriculture and:

        * To inspire and encourage development and widespread adoption
of sustainable food and farming systems.
        * To provide national recognition to an individual or group of
persons who has contributed in an exemplary way toward the goal of making
U.S. agriculture more sustainable.
        * To raise awareness of the importance of sustainable
agriculture for communities, family farms, the environment, and the food
security and well-being of all people.

The deadline for submitting nominations is April 1, 2000.

Sustainable agriculture and sustainable farming systems research focus on
the concept of working to sustain economic, environmental, and social
resources for the benefit of future generations. The philosophy and
tradition of the Iroquois people and other North American tribes is to plan
current activities (agriculture, hunting, fishing, etc) with seven
generations (150 years) of beneficiaries in mind.

" This award focuses on the positive. The award presents an opportunity to
recognize some of the heroes in sustainable agriculture and systems research
who are solving complex problems in innovative ways", said Kim Leval, the
Research & Technology Policy Program Leader for the Center for Rural Affairs
and the Consortium for Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education
(CSARE).
