Ecotourism

Thought perhaps you all might be able to help out on this for me.

A community development specialist I work with is interested in gathering
more information about ecotourism. She is working with a couple of towns in
connecting trails throughout the Ozark Mountains in MO.

She is looking for resources, contacts, others who have worked on similar
projects. Below is some additional info from her and some correspondances
she has had with others.

Thanks for your help.

In Carter County there are numerous National Park Service trails, some no
longer maintained. It is possible to link all of the trails together
through the town of VanBuren. This would double the length of the current
tourist season for the County.

The local Heart Health coalition likes funding trails, but does so
without a "big picture." Recently the chamber of commerce got involved
in trail development and would like to create a new section of trail
from the community center to the new National Park Service (NPS) building
and trail head. The number of private easements required for 90% of the
project are 0.

Eventually they would like to see an extension of one trail section so
that it would join together a number of small historic towns(in another
county). Right now we have the support of MO Dept of Conservation and NPS,
but there is a concern of maintenance cost on the trails. There is already
a difference between what the public views as a usable trail and what MDC
considers a viable trail.

I am currently involved in a large
"eco-tourism" project in the Ozark region. It involves linking existing
NFS/NPS trail through town and between a new community center and
existing trails. The number of private easements required for this are
few and not necessary for the 90% of project completion. The impact on
the county would be substantial, doubling the length of the current
tourist season and increasing local resources and businesses.
Because one can never have enough
information or resources, I am requesting any information or contacts
you might have regarding ecotourism. Although the current project
participants are not calling it that. This project may end up involving
multiple counties long term.
                                Thank you,
