The Northeast Organic Farming Association of Massachusetts presents
The 2000 Practical Farm Skills Workshop Series!

The goal of this workshop series is to provide training in practical
technical and management skills for New England farmers. This series is a
collaborative effort; many of the workshops are cosponsored by the New
England Small Farm Institute (NESFI).

Friday & Saturday February 11 & 12, 2000
Introduction to Holistic Resource Management with Willie Gibson
Holistic Resource Management is a very useful farm planning tool. It is
used to set personal, financial, and environmental goals, and to develop
criteria for decision making which will bring the farmer or farm family
ever closer to their long range goals. Willie Gibson works for University
of Vermont Extension and has run a number of Holistic Resource Management
workshops. This workshop is cosponsored by NESFI. The workshop runs from
6-9:30pm Friday and 9-4 Saturday. This workshop will be held at NESFI in
Belchertown, Massachusetts.
Cost $45, pre-registration required.

Getting Started in Vegetable Production with Vern Grubinger
Vern Grubinger, of the University of Vermont, has just released his new
book Vegetable Production from Start-Up to Market. This extraordinary book
draws on Vern's wealth of experience working with vegetable farmers in New
England. The workshop will focus on soils, pest control, and marketing,
for the aspiring or beginning vegetable grower. This workshop is
cosponsored by NESFI. The workshop will be held at NESFI, in Belchertown,
Massachusetts.
Cost $30, pre-registration required.

Organic Apple Intensive with Michael Philipps
Michael Phillips, author of The Apple Grower; A Guide for the Organic
Orchardist, will cover organic apple production from the latest in plum
curculio control to the techniques of the pre-chemical era. The focus will
be on organic apple production for the homestead orchard and small
diversified farm. The workshop will be held at Brook Farm, the home and
orchard of Alan and Dvora Suprenant, in Ashfield, Massachusetts. This
workshop is cosponsored by NESFI. The workshop will run from 10am to
3:30pm.
Cost $30, pre-registration required.

Saturday, May 13, 2000
On-Farm Composting with Arnie Voehringer
This workshop will cover the theory, techniques, and equipment for
preparing large amounts of compost on the farm. It will include both
indoor class time and hands-on work in the field. Arnie Voehringer,
proprietor of White Oak Farm, is an expert on composting and farm
equipment. This workshop is cosponsored by NESFI. This workshop will be
held at NESFI in Belchertown, Massachusetts, and will run from 9am to 4pm.
Cost $30, pre-registration required.
