plenary lecture of dr. peter fuerst at the congress of the german
society for nutrition 1993 in bonn:

 //---//
 prologue:

in the late 70ies i was a guest professor in clinical
biochemistry at the university of xxxxxx. together with my
friend and colleage dr. viannars we rented a nice apartement in
xxxxxxx. our letter was a friendly irish gentleman, whose weight
was about 140 kg. his wife rosalie, being born in sicilia was
extremely slim and weighted no more than 45-48 kg, while their
son elliot with his 23 years was a real [a quite unfriendly
word, don't know how to translate, he simply was VERY corpulate
with an enormous paunch] of about 180 kg!. all three of them
were extremly affectionate and friendly towards us, but it was a
continuous nightmare to be invited by them for their meals. they
used to have at least 5-6 courses with lots of beer and wine,
the dessert mainly consisted of at least 3 enormous pieces of
creme and chocolate pies. after dinner rosalie regularly went to
fetch a box of pills, placed it on the table and both of the
gentlemen took two of the pills each.

"this is lecithin, which protects our vessels and helps us in a
stunning way to reduce coronary diseases" elliot used to tell us
in a very polite, though educational manner. "my dear gentlemen
and doctors, you also should do something good for your
health", the father politely added after swallowing down the pills
by aid of a big glass of beer....
