Howdy, all--

I'm pleased and excited to report that, effective 2/1, I begin work
as the communications director for Redefining Progress here in San
Francisco.

Founded in 1995, RP is a public policy organization that questions
existing models and measures of progress--including the Gross
Domestic Product index and the unexamined notion that growth is the
sole goal or indicator of a healthy economy. RP builds alternative
indicators, indexes, and thinking as to what real progress means. You
may be aware of their "Genuine Progress Indicator" index (an
alternative to the GDP), and their work on Ecological Footprints
(which will be included in the 2000 World Wildlife Fund "Living
Planet Report"). RP also looks at tax reform, and is moving into the
areas of common assets and accurate pricing.

I'm sure you'll see why I'm excited. It was my dearest hope to
continue working in sustainability, despite being located in the
hotbed of Dot Coms, IPOs, GMOs, and SUVs. RP works on the broader
context of economic and social sustainability-- where many of the
problems reside that we in sustainable ag run smack into, in trying
to build more sustainable food systems. For instance, the price
versus the cost of industrial foods, or the impossiblity of unlimited
growth when dealing with natural systems, or the real costs of
pesticide use (including health problems and ecosystem destruction).

I am honored that RPs staff has invited me to become part of their
senior management team, to help them build an extensive, flexible,
and comprehensive communications program. This is an organization
full of savvy, caring, and wonderful people, who face organizational
and social challenges with wit, faith, hope, and energy.

My intent is to remain on SANET and IFFS as an individual, and to
stay in touch with many of you--and here you thought you'd be rid of
me, eh? Noooooo way. :^) There will be opportunities for
partnerships, and I'll be drawing on a good number of you for
counsel, insights, and perspectives.

You can continue to reach me at this address (mgs23@pacbell.net),
which is my home office. I'll pass along my new RP-related one, and
phone number at that office, as soon as I have them, for
professional-related issues.

In closing, my work with CIAS, with USDA/SAN, with the organizations
some of you represent, and with you all individually, has been a
great grace in my life. I thank each of you for the humanity, vision,
energy, and courage you bring to this work of rethinking society, and
redefining, in the ways we have, progress around the issues of food
and land stewardship. I'd like to especially acknowledge my farmer,
activist, policy, researcher, and eater friends and colleagues in
Wisconsin and the Upper Midwest. Words will never be able to express
my affection, respect, and gratitude to you. I'm indebted to you for
keeps, and am glad it's so.

Now all that's missing in my life is figuring out how to grow food in
the Financial District. I have this fantasy of running a milking
herd--probably Jerseys--in Golden Gate Park, but you'll hear about
that later.

:^)

Reporting live, 1,000 feet from the far left edge of The West, I wish you

peace
misha
