DIRECTOR OF THE COMMON ASSETS PROGRAM
Redefining Progress is seeking an innovative director for a new
Program on Common Assets, those community or national assets
(resources and
institutions) that are a common inheritance. They are of interest for
their contributions to civic life and well-being and the necessity of
their
maintenance to progress. Their mismanagement and degradation often
erode the quality of life and increase the cost of living. The
program's goal is
to expand the public understanding and improve the management of
these crucial assets that tend we to tend to take for granted.
(Examples of
common assets are: fisheries, public schools, the atmosphere, the
broadcast spectrum, public parks, and many others.) The senior
management
team is being expanded and re-organized as part of an organizational
transition under the new Executive Director.
Position Responsibilities:
Developing, in collaboration with other staff, a five-year program
plan for advancing Common Assets, including strategic projects and
effective communications;
Working closely with the Executive Director to secure adequate
funding to carry out the plan;
Supervising staff members to meet program objectives and funding
responsibilities for this $300,000 program area;
Participating as a member of the Program Team in the refinement of
RP's overall program;
Meeting with funders and providing regular reports to funders as
requested by the Executive Director;
Attending and conducting meetings and conferences that advance this
program area and establish RP's leadership in the field;
Establishing relationships with existing and new advocate allies in
order to advance Common Assets as defined in the program plan;
Conducting original and secondary research to high professional
standards to analyze the monetary and non-monetary value of common
assets and improve their management;
Writing reports, op eds, speeches, and other communications that
broaden understanding of common assets;
Being an engaging and effective spokesperson for RP; and
Being a congenial and responsible member of the RP staff.
Qualifications:
An advanced degree, preferably a doctorate or corresponding
professional degree, in economics, law, social science, public
policy, resource management, environmental science or related field;
Strong quantitative and analytic skills;
Strong communications skills, both written and oral;
Experience with advocacy efforts;
Ability to think and frame ideas across disciplines;
Experience managing a staff and projects with deadlines and deliverables;
Highly developed research and computer skills;
Solid political instincts, if not experience;
Experience in program design and budgeting;
Experience as a mentor or coach to less experienced staff;
A network of professional contacts in areas pertinent to policy and
public management;
Comfortable making new contacts, delivering presentations, and
exploring unfamiliar ideas; and
Diverse media experience valued.
This position should appeal most to an individual eager to define an
important policy agenda and advance it over time as part of a
significant and still
developing NGO. Team building and learning will add to his/her
success. Humor and an appreciation of others' talents and backgrounds
will add to job satisfaction in this position.
Salary commensurate with experience.
Position available January 10, 2000.
