TO: Sustainable Agriculture Advocates
FR: Linda Elswick, IPSA, SAFS Caucus
Sustainable agriculture and land management will be key topics of
discussion in the eighth session of the United Nations Commission on
Sustainable Development (CSD) in New York, April 20-May 3. This body meets
annually to review progress toward the goals of Agenda 21.
To learn more about the work of the UN Commission on Sustainable
Development and how to participate:
http://www.un.org/esa/sustdev/mgroupsMain.htm
To see the CSD NGO website, go to:
<www.csdngo.org/csdngo> and see the agriculture page. This site invites
participation in the Sustainable Agriculture/Food Systems (SAFS) NGO
Caucus, a group of organizations from around the world who have chosen this
venue to advocate for policy changes, highlight best practices, and monitor
progress or the lack thereof in sustainable agriculture and rural
development.
It is customary for the US government to invite non-governmental and
business groups (one
each usually) to participate in the US delegation to the meeting. The
notice below from the Citizens Network for Sustainable Development is a
call for nominees.
>>> Gentles,
>>>
>>> As has been the practice for the past several years, we believe that the
>>>US State
>>> Department will again request that The CitNet/CSD NGO Caucus will submit
>>> nominations for individuals to serve as NGO advisors on the US
>>> delegation to the February 2000 Intersessional and CSD-8 in April 2000.
>>>
>>> We are seeking volunteers/nominees ASAP from CitNet members and other
>>> Caucus participants.
>>>
>>> Duties have varied widely over the years but basic responsibilities
>>> include:
>>>
>>> -- serving as a "conduit" for information exchange and
>>> flow between NGOs and US Gov. Delegation
>>>
>>> -- meeting daily with one of the co-chairs to brief
>>> them and the Caucus on items of interest regarding
>>> the delegation and their assigned topic;
>>>
>>> -- attending meetings of the US delegation to provide
>>> NGO perspectives ON topics discussed and to carry out
>>> assigned tasks for the delegation; and
>>>
>>> -- assure scheduling of US Delegation briefings for US
>>> NGOs.
>>>
>>> Nominees must be familiar and involved with CSD issues and Agenda
>21-related
>>> issues. Familiarity with UN processes and CSD procedures are very
>important.
>>> Nominees need not have expertise in the particular CSD focus areas for the
>>> current year.
>>>
>>> NGO REPRESENTATIVES ON THE US DELEGATION ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR
>>> MEETING THEIR OWN COSTS FOR PARTICIPATION. THEY ARE ALSO EXPECTED
>>> TO ATTEND THE INTERSESSIONALS (THIS MAY AMOUNT TO ONLY PORTIONS
>>> OF THE INTERSESSIONALS AS NGO REPRESENTATION MAY BE BROKEN UP
>>> INTO TOPICAL FOCI) AND THE CSD ITSELF FOR THE ENTIRE LENGTH
>>> OF THE SESSION.
>>>
>>> The delegation in the past has considered the NGO representatives to be
>>> full members of the working delegation team.
>>>
>>> Delegation members have generally been encouraged (unless they live in the
>>> NYC area) to stay at the same hotel as the delegation. While this can be
>>> very strategically advantageous (e.g., being on hand for late night
>>> unscheduled discussions, drafting sessions, etc.) but is not required,
>>> especially if financial resources are an issue.
>>>
>>> Tom Rogers (rogers@crle.org), Center for Respect of Life and
>>> Environment and Gail Karlsson (gkarlsson@igc.org), as a part of UNA-USA,
>>>were
>>> NGO representatives on the delegation to intersessionals and CSD-6 and
>>>7. They
>>> are available to respond to questions and provide insights about
>>>participating.
>>>
>>> Because of the short time between now and the intersessional, we should
>>> have nominations to the State Department in January. Thus, we are
>>> requesting nominations/volunteers be submitted to Doug Hunt,
>>> <info@citnet.org> no later than January 15, 1999.
>>>
>>> Sincerely,
>>> Doug Hunt AND Tom Rogers
