Earthworms and copper (was: low risk...)

I found a few abstracts on copper toxicity to earthworms. I'll send them
directly to you (anyone else, let me know if you want them). In one of the
studies, they grew worms in soil with 242 ppm copper for 112 days to dose
them. That's quite a bit. How much do you put on with an application of
bordeaux or other fixed copper, an ounce or so as metallic? Keep in mind
that 242 ppm represents around 500 pounds in the acre-plow-layer. I am sure
the danger is greatest in light textured and acid soil. Heavy metals are
not degraded in the soil like modern fungicides, and long-term use of copper
is probably not a good idea.
