I thought I had sent this out before but now I think maybe I made a
mistake(Thanks, Glenn, very much for your earlier reply.)
I am currently working for the small grains breeder at Virginia, but will be
going to the Netherlands ( at Wageningen) this summer to begin a master's
degree in Ecological Agriculture. My undergraduate degree is in something
called Earth Systems and I am very interested in systemic and integrated
solutions and perspectives. I am particularly interested in the application
of research and in extension work--basically I want to work to help farmers
and others to become more sustainable, solving conflicts between competing
environmental and human needs.
I am looking for any help and advice you all can give me towards this
end--both specifically for graduate work (what to focus on, areas of
underdeveloped knowledge) and for work I plan to do afterwards (where is
help in creating sustainable systems needed most?). I feel eager to get out
of academia and to start making things happen but I feel that I need to gain
some more knowledge first( both so that I can make good solutions and so
that people will hire me!)
I do not as yet have a project but would very much like to do my research in
Latvia--looking at managing abandoned farm lands(from seizures from the
commmunist era). Can anyone give me advice about structuring such a project
or on whom to contact to obtain funding and support(financial aid does not
seem to extend out of country). I am also willing to cooperate with any
institutions or individuals who are looking for someone to carry out
research in developing sustainable farming systems!
Sanet has been a wonderful source of help, knowledge and inspiration for me
and I want to thank you all for that as well as thanking you in advance for
you help. Any thoughts, comments or questions are very welcome. ( and sorry
for the length)
thank you,
Jane
