Thanks for your interest. I don't believe that the article is available
online. Unfortunately the version I forwarded does not include a great
photograph of Tom Lyson. FAP staff have discussed putting the article up on
the FAP website (URL below), but we have little time for that sort of
thing. You possibly could request a reprint to the editor of ALS News,

>> Lyson has put the theory of civic community into action as director of
>> Farming Alternatives: Cornellís Agriculture and Development and
>Diversification
>> Program. The program is a $250,000-a-year think tank that promotes community
>> agricultural development through sophisticated direct marketing of locally
>> grown, value-added productsówhatís known as the New Agriculture.
For the record, I know the $250,000 figure appeared in the article, but it
is surely a typo as the total budget hovers around $150,000 with two-thirds
or more of that coming from research and extension grants. We do, however,
think that FAP delivers at least $250,000 worth of value for that amount.

Many people say that "language by nature lies," but I've never agreed
with that. Language is a tool. It can be used to clarify or to confuse,
to build collaboration or to enhance control. Clarity, honesty,
frankness, and integrity are gifts of the soul, and not all people
choose to unwrap them. And some, alas, are trained from the cradle
to use it to manipulate, rather than to witness. Those who use it to
witness, these days, are often ridiculed (unscientific, impressionistic,
emotional, undocumented, subjective), while master manipulators are
held up as exemplars. --Michele Gale-Sinex, 09/20/1999
