OFRF AWARDS RECORD AMOUNT IN 1999;
SPRING 2000 DEADLINE APPROACHES
Over $128,000 in grant funds were awarded by the Organic Farming
Research Foundation (OFRF) in 1999, the largest annual amount of research
dollars granted in the organization=92s 9-year history.
Kaolin particle film coatings to suppress insects and disease in apples,
non-chemical methods for controlling parasitic mites in honeybees, and
organic pest management for greenhouse production are 3 of the 23 organic
farming research projects funded this past year.
=93We are seeing more cooperative approaches in organic agriculture
research between farmers and ranchers and the Land Grant university
system. This is both a welcome and needed partnership for today=92s
agriculture,=94 said Jerry DeWitt, chair of OFRF=92s Research & Educa=
tion
Committee that evaluates the grant proposals.
OFRF is dedicated to fostering the improvement and widespread adoption of
organic farming practices. Toward this end, OFRF administers a
competitive grants program to support organic farming research and
education efforts across the United States. Since 1990, OFRF has awarded
close to $630,000 in competitive grants and donor-directed funds. OFRF
disseminates research findings in the form of reports summarizing each
project. Currently, 51 reports are available to the public on topics such
as weed management, managing insects and diseases, fertility management,
livestock, and organic farming systems.
OFRF disburses research and education grants twice a year. Deadlines in
the year 2000 are Jan. 15 and July 15, 2000. The OFRF Board voted at its
October meeting to earmark up to $150,000 for competitive grants in the
year 2000.
