Dairy / Livestock Coordinator
The NOFA-NY Certification Program is seeking a person interested in the
position of Dairy/Livestock Coordinator. The Coordinator is responsible for
the interaction of the Certification Program with dairy and livestock
applicants for organic certification, including visiting farms and
developing educational materials for farmers. The position will be 40 hours
per week and be based in the Certification Program Office in Binghamton,
NY. The successful applicant will begin work in as soon as possible.
1. Duties
a) General Office Duties including: filing, letter writing, answering phone.
b) Answering mail and phone requests for information on the
Dairy/Livestock Certification Program, including technical Information on
correct practices to be used and those that are prohibited.
c) Application Reviews, of both first time and renewing dairy and
livestock applicants, for:
* compliance with Certification Standards
* completeness
d) Preparation of files to be sent to the inspector and coordination with
inspectors so that inspections are completed in a timely manner.
e) Work with Dairy / Livestock Review Committee to complete certification
of applicants
f) Travel to farms throughout NY for the purpose of conducting the
Pre-Application Visits for Dairy Certification
g) Assist with development of forms/applications for use in the Dairy
Certification Program.
h) Data Base Work including:
* entering information and preparing files for new
applicants
* logging in all information on products used by
farmers for both crop and livestock production
* maintaining data base for certification inquiries
i) Coordinate and assist with educational programs for certified farmers
including:
* development of educational programs
* obtaining facilities, speakers, catering
* preparation of program packets
* registration duties
* work with farmers to establish farmer discussion
groups in local areas
* coordinate a series of farm tours, highlighting
good management practices
* review of research materials and literature for
information suitable for educational packets on
specific topics
* provide farmers with a listing of pertinent
educational activities throughout out the year
* assist with publication of regular newsletter to Certified farmers
j) Assist in the development of regular publicity on the Certification
Program
2. Qualifications
* Good working knowledge of organic dairy and
crop production; practical experience a plus
* Ability to develop educational programs appropriate
for organic dairy and livestock systems
* Excellent working knowledge of the Windows 95
operating system, IBM Format
* Excellent working knowledge of Word for
Windows word processing
* Good organizational skills
* Good writing skills and letter creation abilities
* Good telephone skills, able to handle inquiries
promptly and efficiently
* Scheduling flexibility for evening meetings and
Saturday events if necessary
* Reliable automobile, ability to travel when necessary,
including the possibility of overnight stays
3. Compensation & Benefits
* Starting rate: $ 12.00 per hour
* One week paid vacation after one year
* Five paid Holidays per year
* Travel expenses are covered
* Annual Performance and Salary Review
* Major Medical Insurance Plan - on a shared cost
basis - after one year
