Council background
The Iowa Environmental Council is a five-year-old nonprofit organization
working to improve Iowas environment. The Council, working with its 58
member organizations and more than 700 individuals, has played a prominent
role in:
* enhancing professional water monitoring
* jump-starting citizen water monitoring
* protecting groundwater from contamination through agricultural drainage
wells
* working for the sustainable use of livestock manure
* strengthening the network of environmental organizations and influence in
Iowa.
The Council currently focuses primarily on water quality issues, including
a continued lead role in increasing both professional and volunteer water
monitoring, and a campaign to clean up our impaired waters. Agricultural
policy also is a major focus, and our goals include achieving safer manure
management practices and reductions in the use of pesticides.
The Council uses a consensus process to identify focus areas, based on an
established set of criteria. Issues that meet those criteria must: involve a
concern of significant environmental impact, be of statewide importance, be
within the unique capability of the Council to address, offer opportunities
for working with other coalitions, and other criteria.
The Council also works to build and maintain a strong environmental
coalition in Iowa. This includes building partnerships and networks, and
delivering valuable member services such as bulletins, fact sheets,
legislative updates, and newsletters.
The Councils annual budget is around $300,000. This revenue primarily is
generated from foundation grants, membership fees, and corporate contributions.
In addition to the Executive Director, the Councils staff includes a
full-time office manager, full-time research director, part-time
communications director, and student interns.
