Stepping back to the December, 1844 issue of American Agriculturalist
(still publishing), we find the following prices. I have expressed them
in 1999 dollars, as determined by adjusting for the ratio between the
1845 Consumer Price Index ( 7.4 ) and that for 1999 ( 166 ).

Barley 13.44/bu

Beans, white .56/lb

Butter 3.36/lb

Cattle (live) 123./cwt

Cheese 1.12/lb

Clover seed 1.57/lb

Corn 11.87/bu

Cotton 1.34/lb

Flax 30.24/bu

Hay 188.00/ton

Milk 11.20/cwt

Oats 7.84/bu

Rye 15.23/bu

Sugar 1.57/lb

Wheat 22.18/bu

Whisky 1.08/ 750 mL

An editorial comment ( discussing the newly developed McCormick reaper
) in the August, 1844 edition is very telling:

"So long as crops come in so abundantly, we must expect the prices of
produce to rule low; it behooves the agriculturalist, therefore, to
avail himself of all possible improvements in culture and harvesting.
He will thus be enabled to successfully compete with the foreigner and
supply distant nations cheaper than any other country can do. If
prices fall, we must endeavor to grow our products at less cost."

This was *long* before any sort of "cheap food policy." Think about
that for awhile.
