New York Sustainable Agriculture Working Group (NYSAWG, Inc.)
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT (12/06/1999): Executive Director
NYSAWG, Inc. is seeking a full-time executive director to coordinate its
work of promoting a local and regional food and agricultural system in New
York State through its coalition-building for policy advocacy and support
of agriculture-based economic development for farmers and communities. The
director will coordinate NYSAWG’’s networking with NYS environmental, farm,
consumer, farmworker, education/land grant and faith groups, which together
can better, foster a sustainable food system.
This work will include monitoring important food system issues, developing
financial and volunteer support, coordinating legislative policy briefings,
and working with programs that promote rural economic development.
Responsibilities:
--Work with the NYSAWG Board of Directors, its committees, and other staff
to craft and promote NYSAWG's public presence.
--Lead NYSAWG's legislative education efforts, including organizing policy
briefings, meetings and conferences, developing extensive phone contacts
and supervising maintenance of a phone/FAX/e-mail legislative alert network.
--Oversee development of materials such as the newsletter, policy analysis
reports, and media advisories.
--Develop and oversee programs in community, agricultural, and food system
development consistent with NYSAWG's mission, such as small-scale food
processing and direct marketing of agricultural products.
--With guidance and support from Finance Committee, prepare annual budgets
and quarterly financial statements; oversee all financial functions of
NYSAWG, including bookkeeping, accounting, payroll and benefits
--With guidance and support from the fund raising committee and other
NYSAWG staff, raise funds to cover operating expenses of NYSAWG; research
and prepare grant proposals; develop relations with funders; prepare timely
reports, etc.
--Coordinate supporter outreach and volunteer recruitment.
--Oversee office administration, including supervision of other paid staff
and coordination of volunteers.
Qualifications:
--Knowledge of food and agricultural systems (producing, processing,
marketing, and distribution) with experience in New York State preferred.
--Commitment to promoting sustainable and socially just farm and food policies.
--Ability to recruit, motivate, and coordinate people of different
backgrounds and interests.
--Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work as a member of
a team, comfortable with leading and empowering others to lead.
--Demonstrated ability to prioritize activities, meet deadlines, and create
and work within a well-defined organizational structure.
--Experience in planning and carrying out successful public events.
--Experience in successful fund raising.
--Ability to speak and write clearly and appropriately to diverse groups,
including farmers, other NYSAWG supporters, and policy makers.
--Proficiency with word processing and e-mail communications.
--Ability and willingness to travel.
--Have reliable vehicle and valid drivers license.
Location: Preferable location at the NYSAWG office in Rochester, NY.
Salary commensurate with skills and experience. Benefit plan.
