Post-Doctoral Fellow in Sustainable Agriculture

The International
Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) and CIRAD (International
Cooperation Center in Agronomic Research for Development, France),
in collaboration with INIFAP (Mexican National Agronomic, Forestry
and Livestock Research Institute), seeks a Post-Doctoral Fellow to
work in CIMMYT's Natural Resources Group to help develop and assess
maize cropping systems that feature conservation tillage and cover
crops. The position is for two years, and will be based in Morelia,
the capital of the state of Michoacán (300 km west of Mexico City).
The successful candidate will be responsible for establishing and
monitoring long-term cropping system trials; monitoring farmers'
fields and farmers' experiments; testing planting equipment for
conservation tillage, analyzing biophysical processes at work in
cereal-legume intercrops; assessing short- and long-term changes in
soil fertility and soil health; and helping analyze and synthesize
worldwide experiences with conservation tillage, rotations and cover
crops.

Applicants should possess a Ph.D. or a M.Sc. in agronomy or soil
science with three to five years of relevant professional
experience. Apart from those skills required for conducting
high-quality strategic and applied agronomic research, other
desirable skills include: demonstrated capacity for independent
work; practical field research experience with farmers; experience
in training of researchers, technicians and farmers; and previous
work experience in Latin America. The successful candidate will also
possess excellent communication skills in both English and Spanish;
demonstrated ability to work in an interdisciplinary and
inter-institutional team; and sensitivity to diverse cultures and
nationalities. CIMMYT is an internationally funded, non-profit
research and training organization headquartered in Mexico and
affiliated with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural
Research (CGIAR). The Center's mission is to help the poor by
increasing the productivity, profitability, and sustainability of
maize- and wheat-based cropping systems while protecting natural
resources. CIMMYT has an annual budget of approximately US$34
million, and a staff of over 800 based in Mexico and 17 other
