Subject: Economist positions at USDA

Dear All,

We have four positions in the Wholesale and Alternative Markets branch
that will be opening up anywhere from immediately to six months from now.
These are Economist or Agricultural
Marketing Specialist positions. I am sending this email because we have
difficulty attracting qualified candidates from normal announcement
channels. This isn't surprising given the current strength of the economy.

The positions range from GS-9 to GS-12. While there will be a pay raise in
January, the salary currently ranges from $33,650 to $63,456. In the case
of our branch, people tend to move up quickly. (Most are at the GS-9 level
(typical starting pay for an M.S. degree) for one year, GS-11 year two and
GS-12 year three.) The first step of a GS-12 is currently $48,796. In
other words, these are good jobs appropriate for Master's students - if you
are willing to be patient the first two years, you can get a nice salary.

Our branch does a range of work - mostly feasibility studies on wholesale,
farmers and public market facilities. We do have a "Farmer Direct Marketing
Initiative" which is expanding the type of work that we do to include more
outreach. There are opportunities to do some individual research and
projects. A full description of the Wholesale and Alternative Markets (WAM)
program can be viewed at: http://www.ams.usda.gov/tmd/wam.htm

WAM will also need someone to take over the Farmer Direct Marketing Website
(http://www.ams.usda.gov/directmarketing). The site gets about 40,000
visitors a year. The person also has to be willing to write the
corresponding newsletter and handle incoming inquiries.

If you have any M.S. students graduating in December or June who are looking
for jobs, please forward my email and encourage them to contact me if they
are job hunting and have any questions. USDA is also always looking to
diversify its workforce so minorities and women are especially encouraged to
apply. I am here until mid-February. After then, please contact
errol.bragg@usda.gov.

Thanks
Jennifer-Claire Klotz
