HUNGER STRIKE SPOTLIGHTS HORMONE LACED MILK
WASHINGTON, DC, November 23, 1999 (ENS) - Robert Cohen, author of "Milk,
the Deadly Poison" has begun a hunger strike to protest the use of
recombinant bovine growth hormone (rbGH) in U.S. dairy cows. The hormone,
also known as bovine somatotropin and POSILAC, was approved by the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) for boosting milk production. Cohen says he has
proof that rbGH, manufactured by Monsanto, raises the levels of a human
growth hormone known as IGF-1. IGF-1 is suspected of being a key cause of
rapid growth and proliferation of mammary, prostate and colon cancers.
Cohen has sued the FDA to have the drug recalled. Cohen says laboratory
animals treated with rbGH got cancer, that rbGH treated milk has increased
levels of growth hormone, and that blood serum levels of milk hormones
increase in milk drinkers. The FDA reviewed rbGH and concluded that the
hormone produced no metabolic effect in humans and was not cause for
concern. But Cohen says the FDA’s conclusion was based on the belief that
rbGH would be destroyed by pasteurization and by digestion. In his lawsuit,
Cohen challenges both of those principles. To promote his cause, Cohen
began a hunger strike on the 7th of November that he says may last for
months. I am prepared to give my life in this cause," Cohen says on his
website (http://www.hungerstrike.com/strikes/index.html).
