I believe it can take 3 times as much land or more to design a proper
rotation for some intensive crops. I have heard of a straw-berry grower
moving up from 8 acres to a 40 acre ranch, when you factor in pest
control, nitrogen replacement, beneficial insect habitat etc.livestock
can be neccesary or helpful as well.
