Brian - Regarding your request for information on the economics of organic
farming: Our staff here at SAREP have been working with Karen Klonsky at the
Ag. Economics Dept. and her assistant Laura Tourte to develop several organic
cost of production studies. Studies have been completed for rice, almonds,
winegrapes, and a mixed vegetable farming operation; others in the works
include apples, processing tomatoes, and walnuts. The studies include a
lengthy overview on organic production practices. To obtain a copy of any of
the above cost studies, send a $1.00 check for each ($4.00 for the vegetable
study), payable to UC Regents, to Department of Agricultural Economics,
University of California, Davis, CA 95616; include your name, address, and
