Prompted by a recent letter from Curtis Miller to Sal Schettino, I am moved
to poke out my nose and say that I believe there is no call for rude and
patronizing communication on this network. Individuals who post items,
particularly personal thoughts and perceptions and concerns, are due
respect and courtesy for sharing with us, even (perhaps especially)
if we do not agree. Because we cannot, we will not, we should not always
agree.
Unable to leave it there, I must tell you that the "We" in Mr. Miller's
final comment, something to the effect of 'go bark up Monsanto's tree; we
in academia have heard all this (BGH concerns) before' *really* got to me,
and prompted me, as one of the "we", to write to Sal (he sounds like the
kind of guy who wouldn't mind me calling him Sal) to apologize. I enjoy
this list particularly *because* it is NOT a private club, by and for
academicians. I appreciate the postings from all sorts of people who do
all sorts of things and offer all sorts of perspectives. I myself am
temporarily trapped in academia, and so really appreciate the chance to
hear non party line voices.
A joyous spring to you all,
Meg Moynihan
