paying the piper

This reminds me of some expressions learned while living in the
Caribbean:
"El barato sale caro" = "That which is cheap turns out to be
expensive"
"El vago trabaja doble" = "The lazy one ends up working
twice as hard."

And then there's the economist's favorite: "there's no free lunch."

I had a boyfriend once who taught me, "it's better to pay for things
up front, because you always end up paying for it one way or
another in the end." That was a nice translation of the free lunch
idea.
