The Paulownia is an excellent choice for alley cropping aka inter cropping.
Paulownia is very deep rooted and has few upper level roots to interfere with
crops. Paulownia draw nutrients and moisture from deep in the soil profile.
Large leaves will raise the relative humidity during dry air days. Leaves are
very nutritious and decompose rapidly into the upper soil thereby removing
leached nutrients from deep in the ground and moving it back into the upper
levels.
Besides a valuable hardwood timber is produced in about 10 years.
The Chinese have about 2.5 million hectares under this system using Paulownia
