Re: YWK - Money or Human Lives

It is November 14,1999, and I hesitate in even trying to respond to this
message, at this late date. People believe what they are comfortable in
believing. There is a segment of the population who, because of there beliefs,
do want the world to collapse, because of Y2K, or something else. Their wants
overcome reasoned judgment.
The same happens to people like Mike, with his comments describing a "no big
problem" scenario. Either Mike has read nothing other than what the press and
governments have stroked us with, or he has researched the situation and has
not been able to accept the likely possibilities.
Mike disparages the people who have bought things to make themselves more
secure for situations they may encounter. And he does this on a sustainable
agriculture discussion group. Ironic, to say the least.
Visit the US government General Accounting Office website. Read the US State
Department reports on the likelihood of substantial world disruptions. The
National Guard has some interesting things to say. But not many people have, or
will. Too uncomfortable for most of us. We would rather go merrily along, doing
what we like, and ignoring any evidence of possible grief ahead. Rather like
the conventional agriculture community.
What is about to happen over the next 18 months or so is going to happen,
whether we like it or not. Denial is an option, just not a very intelligent
one.
