what's wrong with eating commercial chicken?

Hi Everybody,
A friend of mine came to dinner at my house the other day and we
served free-range chicken, and now he wants to see some "references"
as to why this is better than Factory McChicken found at the store.
He's a budding ecologist here in the Ag. Econ. dept., but he's very
uninformed about these things. I wrote to him some long e-mails
touching on all the points I could think of (water contamination,
animal health and welfare issues, human health issues, the politics
and economics of vertical integration/mergers, concentration of
animal wastes, etc.), but he would like some more authoritative
references than just my rantings! Could somebody out there help me
with this? How about some references or solid agruments about why
conventional agro-chem and concentrated-livestock ag may not be the
only way to "feed the world"? I did forward to him Ann Clarke's
letter on pasture beef. I know there's some more great stuff in the
archives, so if you could remind me of these too (like who wrote them
more or less when) that would be great.

Thanks so much!
Anita
