NORTHEAST ORGANIC FARMING ASSOCIATION OF NEW YORK
18th Annual Conference

PLANTING SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE:
TAKING CHARGE OF OUR SEED SUPPLY
Skills, ideas, and connections for
creating a regional seed supply

January 29 and 30, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY

Every gardener and farmer can become part of rejuvenating seed
production in the Northeast, for the Northeast. Whether you have a 10
ft. square tomato patch, a backyard garden that feeds the family, a
small or large commercial farm or just wish you could do one of these
things, there is something for you at the conference.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn how to go about seed saving
and related seed production techniques. Seed preservation groups and
seed companies will discuss what they need in the way of competence and
quality from local seed growers. This conference will inspire, educate
and connect all levels of growers to seed saving and production where
they live.

At prime time for garden planning, the two-day conference will be held
January 29 and 30 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY.
There will be 30 workshops over two days (5 concurrent sessions) a
keynote address, a Saturday evening debate, vendors and exhibitors. The
conference is being sponsored by the Northeast Organic Farming
Association of New York.

In the last thirty years, we have lost hundreds of cultivated vegetable
varieties. The loss may not be noticeable to the consumer at the
grocery store but to farmers and gardeners, the losses reduce our
ability to grow excellent vegetables in the Northeast.

The reason for raising our own seed supply is simple and is directly
related to the fascinating nature of plants. Plants adapt to their
environments in ways that the most sophisticated plant geneticist
doesn’t understand. When we build on a plant’s ability to adapt to our
soil and climate, we get a crop that’s more and more suited to
conditions here in the Northeast. Anyone can learn the skills of seed
production and simple seed breeding. This conference will get you
started.
