The money earmarked to be used for the writing of matching grants by JCLT,
puts the County on record as supporting the public wish (as denoted in the
County's 2020 Land Use Survey) of protecting farmland in Jefferson County.
The County Board voted 20 to 8 to fund JCLT's efforts to bring more money
into Jefferson County for the purchase of conservation easements. Dissenters
stated that Jefferson County already has enough land protected and that
there is no precedent for non-oversighted moneys being awarded to a private
organization. The overwhelming majority of the Board disagreed, citing the
Economic Development Corporation's yearly stipend as precedent.
This is something myself and a group of very dedicated group of citizens
have worked very hard for 4 or 5 years to make a reality. It is heartening
to see the County government support our efforts.
Many thanks to all who helped 'make it so'.
