Monsanto and organics

Hi Sanetters
I basically cruise this list and pass on the information to others who
are not on it.
But I just have to put a bit of info on myself.

I was invited to a BioTech class that is being sponsored by Monsanto at
WIU in IL.
So far I bet you are thinking........got a clue to where this is going.
I've spoken to a few Ag classes and water resource and management
classes on the topics of our water pollution and the mega-livestock
facilities.
Ths class I sat in on......had an ethics panel to answer questions that
the students fielded to them on biotech. And one of the panelist was a
rep from Monsanto.
The M. rep had a very downplay on organics. I asked to what does he base
his opinion on.
Reply was something in the effect of the grains (and that is the only
aspect of organics that he stressed) is riddled with mycotoxins and the
use of the pesticides and herbicides would eliminate this.
Now we have a choice of mycotoxin vs. chemicals..........I would chance
it with the mycotoxins. Since my way of thinking was in relation to
other products that are raised organically. There is not a guarantee
that the pesticides and such will eliminate the mycotoxin 100%. And he
did not seem concerned that this would create an environmental
problem.......
Aother topic that predominated the class was about labelling. One
student says he has never seen anyone take any notice to labels.....I
told him he hasn't been in the store when I am shopping. These students
are being pruned into the thought patterns of Monsanto and that the
earth concerns are not a part. Monsanto rep seemed to bring out the
point of competition and costs, no stress on environment or safety to
people. So it shows the $$$$$ reigns.
Rep said "Also the organics "trend" is just a way of pushing for higher
prices"

This is sad because our young people are being guided to have concerns
in relation to the $$$ and not to the benefit of people.
I came out of this class witn a real sad heart as to what our future is
being groomed toward.
