RWS Ecosystem Farm is hiring 3 full-season apprentices and 1 4-month summer intern for
the year 2000 season. This is an intensive land-based training program in organic
vegetable production for those who have a serious and mature desire to pursue farming as
a way of life. The work is challenging – physically, mentally and emotionally, though
thorough instruction and encouragement are provided in a safe and nurturing manner.
Applicants must have a strong desire to learn, a willingness to work cooperatively with
others, and be willing to work outdoors in all types of weather and to work hard under
pressure. The apprentices normally work 55 hours/week.
Some prior experience in farming is preferred, though not necessary. Apprentices will
receive instruction in use of hand and mechanical tools (including tractor operation).
The apprentices will also learn CSA operation and management and philosophy of
sustainable agriculture.
Apprentices will be involved in all aspects of production including greenhouse work, soil
preparation, planting, transplanting, drip irrigation, cultivation and mulching, pest
control and harvest.
We offer a monthly stipend of $1250.00 and will assist the apprentices in finding local
and affordable housing. A Senior Apprenticeship position follows the first season with a
$1500.00 monthly stipend. The Accokeek Foundation is an equal opportunity employer.
The Ecosystem Farm is an 8-acre certified organic vegetable farm (includes blueberries,
cut flowers, culinary herbs and cover crops), on the banks of the Potomac River in
Piscataway National Park. We use solar power for irrigation and potable water. We
operate a 75-household CSA.
Please contact by Dec. 20, 1999 for the 2000 season. Inquiries accepted year-round.
