RE: organic and extension people and university types

Lawrence, your comments that only organic is important, "not just
sustainable," bother me. 1) Not all farmers can be organic--some
commodities in some region just don't have the techniques worked out yet.
2) Some organic methods are sometimes worse, in my opinion, than non-organic
methods--cultivating corn on a hillside compated to no-till. 3) Organic
standards say little about scale--you can have "industrial" scale organic
production, leaving all the social criteria of sustainability unsatisfied.
I hope we can move closer to a goal of sustainability that includes
democratic access, widespread household income, social capital, etc.. Some
of my colleagues in extension are at least as wise about these issues as my
colleagues in NGOs or on farms. Hal
