POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Sustainable Agriculture Program Specialist

The National Center for Appropriate Technology (NCAT), a
private non-profit corporation with offices in Butte,
Montana, and Fayetteville, Arkansas, works to promote
sustainable technologies and systems, especially for the
benefit of economically disadvantaged individuals and
communities.

NCAT seeks a highly motivated, outgoing person with a
combination of work experience and training for a new
Program Specialist position based in Montana. This is a
full-time position in our Sustainable Agriculture and
Rural Development Program (SARD). Work will be focused on
our ATTRA project. ATTRA is a national, sustainable
agriculture information service operated by NCAT and
funded by USDA's Rural Business-Cooperative Service.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities: We are looking for an
individual that is highly motivated, can work with minimal
supervision and has excellent interpersonal skills to work
in the following areas:

Policy: The Program Specialist will identify policy &
macro-economic issues and initiatives at state, national
and international levels as they affect agriculture,
particularly small to medium-sized farms and provide input
and advice to NCAT personnel about these initiatives and
issues.

Technical: The Program Specialist will visit farms and
farmer groups to identify technical issues important to
the farm community of the west and northwest, with
particular reference to issues that impact the sustainable
use of the arid farmlands of the west and northwest. The
Montana based Program Specialist will be expected to be in
regular communication with the NCAT staff in Arkansas to
ensure they are up-to-date concerning his/her findings.
Specialist will be expected to provide farmers, ranchers
and agricultural organizations with information and
technical assistance developed by the ATTRA project on
environmentally sound practices for ranching, agronomic
and horticultural crops. Technical experience/knowledge
related to irrigation issues would be helpful.

Representational: The Program Specialist will represent
NCAT at appropriate agricultural venues, such as farmer
and commodity groups, in the Northwest region. The
Specialist will be expected to make presentations to these
groups concerning NCAT activities relevant to these
groups, as well as to relay feedback from these groups to
NCAT staff. Representational duties may include several
days per month on the road around the state of Montana and
the Northwest region. This position will be required to
travel at least quarterly to NCAT's Fayetteville, AR
office.

Requirements: Applicant should have, as a minimum, a Master
of Science degree in agronomy, soils, integrated pest
management, agricultural policy and/or horticulture, OR a
combination of farming or agricultural policy/advocacy work
and other work experien , education and training which
demonstrates equivalency. Experience in commercial farm or
ranch production and marketing is preferred. A
demonstrated interest in environmentally sound practices
and integrated farming systems, and familiarity with
concepts of sustainability and appropriate technology is
preferred. Applicant should be familiar with structure of
agriculture issues at state and national levels as well as
environmental initiatives and policies as they impact
agriculture. Knowledge of international policy impacts on
US Agriculture is desirable.

Compensation: The starting salary for the position is
based upon experience and education. NCAT offers a
comprehensive fringe benefit package that includes a 401
(k) plan, health and life insurance and a cafeteria plan.
The position is located in Butte, Montana. Reasonable
relocation costs may be covered.

Duration: The position would be available to start January
3, 2000 and is regular, full-time. Start and end dates
will be negotiated based on candidate's availability and
project priorities.

Working Environment: The position will be based in Montana
and work primarily with the SARD program and ATTRA project
in the NCAT-Fayetteville, Arkansas office. . Must be able
to work effectively with stress related to deadlines,
communication with a distant office and multiple
priorities.
