I'm located in central North Carolina. Just got my cover crop in last
Saturday, 10/16/99. I used a hairy vetch/rye combination. Had hoped to
plant it in early September, but couldn't due to all the rains from
Hurricanes.
I planted my veggies this year in a field that had been sown in fescue
for the past 15 years. I only tilled the area where I intended to plant,
about 40 inches wide, and I left the fescue growing between the rows to
control runoff. I was going to use a pull-type drop spreader for seed
placement of my cover crop. Unfortunately, it decided to break on the
fourth row, and I ended up sowing the rest by hand. I then raked the soil
lightly for seed coverage. I finished up at dark, and we received about 2.8
inches of rain on Sunday, courtesy of Hurricane Irene.
Boy, what a year this has been! Good Luck to all!
