CENSUS OF AGRICULTURE WISH LIST

At the Second National Small Farm Conference in St. Louis last week a group of
CBO, Extension and USDA personnel met briefly between workshops to discuss
changes that might be considered for the 2002 Census of Agriculture.

The current Census of Agriculture does not currently reflect emerging changes
in the agriculture industry-especially among small farms. The census' emphasis
largely remains commodity oriented, even as hundreds of thousands of small
family farms experiment with new agriculture products and markets. If the
Census was made more relevant to small farms we might see an increase in small
farm participation in the Census.

I am soliciting feedback from as many interested persons and organizations as
possible around the country. A consolidated list of possible changes and
additions will be compiled by me (Duncan Hilchey) and tendered to the USDA by
Desmond Jolly, Directory of the Small Farm Program at University of California,
Davis.

Examples of Possible Changes and Additions
Though relatively simplistic at this stage here are some examples of changes
and topical areas which might be added to the Census. Feel free to comment on
these and add as many of your own ideas.

1. "Production for Direct Human Consumption" (AKA Direct Marketing) currently
only includes (farms, total and average per farm);
Would like this broken down by "type" of direct marketing: PYO, farm-stand,
farmers' market, CSA, etc.

2. Include non-edible category under direct marketing (e.g., flowers,
decorative greens, etc.)

3. Direct wholesale (farms, $, and breakdown by type)
Restaurants
Supermarkets
Other growers
Other direct wholesale

4. Agritourism (Farms, $, and breakdown by type)
Bed & Breakfast
Farm tours
Animal petting
Hay rides
Other agritourism

5. Value-adding (Farms, $, and breakdown by type)
Processing
Packaging
Information
Other value-adding

6. Membership in Cooperatives (Farms, $, and breakdown by type)
Marketing co-op
Purchasing co-op
Combination co-op
Other cooperative

7. Organic (Farms, acreage, and breakdown by type) [I am not sure whether this
is in or not]
Certified
Non-certified

8. Quality of life measures??????
