I always reference the book "Grow It" for such quandaries. And I usually
broadcast 2 bu/acre for winter wheat/rye (4.5#/1000sf), then do a light
disking to cover. You could drag a couple of tree limbs if you don't have a
disk. This is on our 2 acre garden plot, and we've had good success. It
would help to roll the field after disking, but I don't have a cultipacker
or ring-roller. Am getting ready to sow the cover crop again this weekend,
hopefully. Its getting sort of late. (This is upper elevation Tennessee).
We were just up your way. Pretty country. The leaf colors are peaking, it
seems.
