FARMERS NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE MILLENNIUM BUG CAN
AFFECT FARM EQUIPMENT: PORK, DAIRY AND GRAIN
OPERATIONS
NEED TO DEVELOP CONTINGENCY PLANS

Electronic scales, moisture testers, grain drying
equipment and crop storage ventilation systems used in
grain elevators, can all be effected by the
millennial bug.

Owners of pork, poultry and dairy operations across
the United States need to be sure their
climate-control devices will not collapse on New
Year's Day. Producers with livestock feeding or
milking systems, environmental control mechanisms in
barns or confined feeding operations are advised to
contact manufacturers to find out how they might be
affected.

According to the U.S. Senate Special Committee on the
Year 2000 Problem, "the cost for small businesses to
regain lost operational capability for any mission
critical failure will range from $20,000 to $3.5
million."

Shortages of software/harware supplies, transport
problems, technical assistance and support could be
significant after the New Year and must be calculated
into contingency planning.

University of Minnesota Extension Service has
constructed a farm Y2K site: Complete with a farm
checklist, farm Y2K fact sheet, and downloadable (as
well as web-based) Powerpoint presentation (45-60
minutes) on farm Y2K awareness, inventory and
assessment, and contingency planning - complete with
presenters notes:
