Seems to me that we're missing the point of Anita's original post.
(Though there have been some real good comments added.)

Anita (at least to me) is saying that we tend in this country to be
looking at third worlders and saying they're responsible for ecological
problems because they're having too many children. And we're not looking
at what we're doing. Reminds me of our sanctimonious appeal to Central &
South America to preserve their rain forests after we've destroyed the
North American rain forests.

It's always easier to look to others for blame. Maybe what we need to do
is start with our own lives and reduce our consumption. Then look to
setting an example for other North Americans and becoming active in
spreading the word. If the rest of the world likes to emulate us, how
about if we show them how to live in a developed area and not be such
consumers.

That is, let's preach what we practice rather than saying to other
nations, "Do as I say, not do as I do."
