The GMO issue does have a corollary in the development of America's
nuclear program: both require a huge infrastructure to implement and the
associated big bucks, and both have potential for huge disasters which
requires VERY careful and close controls to avoid such disasters. This
latter point is where the fallibility of man dropped the ball for the nuclear
program. It will probably happen for the GMO issue as well, if allowed to
develop.
A difference between the two is that the nuclear program didn't have
many popular public detractors in it's early stages, but the GMO issue
does. Also, government (acting as referee) has a chance to act on
public opinion against the proliferation of GMOs in a way it couldn't act
during the (military) buildup of nuclear plants. Not that anybody wants to
depend on gov't to save the day...
Neither is intrinsically "evil", although I would like to say that GMOs are.
