"I´m also doing a bit of research for my huge (my only,
really) project for this term, which has to do with the
ecological sustainability, the quality of life, and the
future applicability of a village high in the Talamancas on
the Pacific side that is called Durika.
"Durika is made up of 11 families that left San jose [i
messed up . . . san jose, NOT san juan] (for OBVIOUS
reasons) in order to found a completely self-sufficient and
sustainable community in the hills. They farm organically,
they purchase reserve land, they build their own houses.
Two friends and I are planning a trip to Durika of about 6
days to research the success of the place, and it´s
possible applicability to others who might have
similar interests. Check out www.durika.com for all
the info. You´ll love this place.
"What I´d love from you is any email info, websites,
journal articles, books, or any other reference
material or literature. WE´d greatly appreciate any or all
info that you could send us on sustainability within
small communities, especially those that may have
translocated from an urban setting.
"With a little luck, we´re going to try to pioneer a
partnership with ACM [associated colleges of the midwest].
The thing is, they are all about spreading the word, and
we´re all about getting some cheap lodging. We figure that
if we could propose a long term research commitment and
visit schedule for them, maybe they´d cut the lodging price
in half. It´s all about the long term and the big
picture, right?."
thanks again for any info that i can pass along . . . and
browse thru myself.
